poker

Typical poker games award the pot to the highest hand. However, different variations of the game may allow the pot to be split between the highest and lowest hands.

Poker is a game played by a group of people around an oval or circular table. The players begin by placing chips in a pot. They then place bets on their poker hand. The players must act in a specified order. The player to the left of the button must post a small blind. This person is the initial dealer. The player to the left of the button is also responsible for making the first bet.

The first player to make a bet is called an active player. The dealer indicates the deal by moving the button one spot clockwise after each hand. The next round begins with the remaining two dealers.

If there are four players and nobody has a pair, the dealer breaks the tie by dealing the top card. This card is generally the ace. In some games, the ace is treated as the lowest card.

In a standard poker game, the lowest hand is seven-five-four-three-two in two or more suits. Five of a kind is a hand with five cards of the same suit. The highest hand is a straight, a flush, or a five-card high.

The game involves skill and a bit of luck. It can be played with as few as two people or as many as eight.
