What is a Casino?

Casino is a gambling establishment where customers gamble money or other items of value on games of chance. These games include gaming machines, table games (such as blackjack and craps), and random number games (like roulette and baccarat). The house always has an advantage over the players; this advantage is mathematically determined and is called the house edge. Some casino games have a skill element, and players who possess sufficient skills can eliminate this disadvantage. In these games, the casino takes a small percentage of the winnings (known as the vigorish or rake).

The first casinos were established on Native American reservations in the United States, which are not subject to state anti-gambling laws. In the 1980s, they began to appear in other places, such as Atlantic City and other locations in New Jersey; Puerto Rico; and several other countries. Some casinos are operated by state governments, while others are owned and managed by private corporations.

Some of the best-known casinos are located in tourist destinations, such as Las Vegas and Macau. These attract high rollers and other visitors who are interested in gambling. Some casinos also have a reputation for offering quality entertainment, such as musical and comedy performances.

The elegant spa town of Baden-Baden in Germany became a playground for wealthy Europeans 150 years ago, drawing royalty and the aristocracy from across Europe. The casino here is one of the most lavishly outfitted in the world, with baroque flourishes adorning its poker rooms and a grand three-ring stage for live performances.
