Impact of Global Warming on Marine Ecosystems

Increasing global warming has a significant impact on marine ecosystems. Continuously increasing sea water temperatures, decreasing pH, and changing patterns of the hydrological cycle, all contribute to major changes occurring in the marine environment. Here are some of the main impacts to be aware of. First, rising sea water temperatures cause coral bleaching. Coral, as an important habitat for many marine species, is very sensitive to temperature changes. When the water temperature exceeds their tolerance limit, the symbiotic algae that provide color and nutrition to the coral will come out, leaving the coral white. This phenomenon results in habitat loss and threatens the survival of many marine species. Second, positive impacts of global warming on the productivity of some species may exist, but for most, these are disproportionate to the losses experienced. Species that are sensitive to changes in temperature, such as fish and mollusks, are starting to experience changes in distribution patterns. Many fish species are moving to colder waters, disrupting local ecosystems and affecting the livelihoods of fishermen who depend on traditional catches. Fourth, global warming causes melting of ice in polar regions, changing the salinity and temperature of sea water. These changes can trigger extreme weather phenomena, such as more violent storms and increased frequency of rain, which can damage coastal habitats such as mangroves and coral reefs. This habitat loss has a direct impact on biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. Fifth, the impact of global warming will also be seen from an increase in marine heat waves which can cause mass deaths of species with low temperature tolerance. These events trigger an imbalance in the ecosystem, often leaving behind invasive species that are better able to adapt to new conditions. Sixth, the mangrove ecosystem, which functions as protection for the coast, is also threatened. Rising sea levels due to melting ice and the effects of global warming have the potential to destroy mangrove forests. Loss of mangroves means loss of habitat for many aquatic species as well as reduced protection against coastal erosion. Lastly, the integration of climate change and human activities such as overfishing and pollution further worsens the situation. The already stressed marine environment now faces additional challenges that accelerate ecosystem damage. The impact of global warming on marine ecosystems is very complex and interrelated. Effective and consistent treatment is needed to mitigate risks and further impacts on marine life and the welfare of humanity who depend on marine resources.
