Poker is a card game played with chips. Players make a bet, often called an ante, before being dealt cards. Once the hand is dealt, each player may choose to either call or raise a bet.
The hand that wins is the one that best combines all the cards in the hand. If no combination is possible, a single card is valued as high. A pair (two matching cards of the same rank) and a flush (five consecutive cards from the same suit) break ties.
Royal flush, straight flush, and four of a kind are the highest-ranking hands. A royal flush is made up of an ace, king, queen, and Jack, all of the same suit.
A straight flush is made up of five consecutive cards of the same suit, and three of a kind is made up of 3 cards of the same rank plus 2 cards of another rank, such as two aces and a nine.
Full house, flush, and four of a kind are also winning hands. A full house contains three matching cards of the same rank and two matching cards of a different rank, such as 3 aces and a queen.
A poker tournament is a competition to determine the strongest hand of a certain number of players. It is typically played at a casino or cardroom. It usually consists of a series of betting rounds, followed by a showdown, where the hands are revealed and evaluated.
